Petzval lenses have a distinctive swirly bokeh (as seen in the likes of the 2023 feature Poor Things).
The original Petzval design was developed in 1840 with portrait photography in mind, so the centre of the frame is sharp but rapidly falls out of focus as you move towards the edge of the frame.
The TLS rehousing put the classic Petzval optical design in a modern cinema lens housing, with PL mount, cirtcular aperture and 110mm fronts.
These lenses have a very large image circle - greater than 60mm (our projector tops out at 60mm) - so they will cover pretty much any widely available sensor made up to this point. For coverage tests, see our article here.
The Good Grief team with Jesse Lane as DP lensed this promotion for an Aesop and OTHER MATTER collaboration with our TLS rehoused Petzval lenses and the ARRI Alexa Mini LF.
Test footage showing the 58mm and 85mm Petzval lenses on ARRI Alexa Mini LF.
This test clip shows the coverage for each of the ARRI formats LF Open Gate, 4.3K LF 16:9, 3.8K LF 16:9 and Alexa Mini open gate. The Petzvals easily cover all of these formats so you only see slight vignetting in these tests.
